Two-time South American champions Chile have made it back-to-back wins for the first time in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers after they thrashed bottom team Venezuela 3-0 in Santiago on Thursday night. The two straight wins have been recorded on the back of a run of seven games without victory.
Ahead of the rescheduled matchday five clash at home to Paraguay, Chile had not won since beating Peru at home on matchday three. The Chileans drew three times and lost four times over the course of the seven-game winless run. The run came to an end thanks to a 2-0 victory during the abovementioned encounter with the Paraguayans. After a goalless affair in the first half, Chile scored twice in three second half minutes to seal only their second win as far as the World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign is concerned in the South American section.
Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Bereton has been in sensational form for his English Championship club especially in the month of September and he scored the all-important first goal at the expense of Paraguay. Bereton is the reigning Championship Player of the Month after he scored six goals for Blackburn Rovers last month. He was responsible for the opening goal against the Paraguayans before veteran right-back Mauricio Isla added a second goal on 72 minutes to secure the three points.
Bereton made it two goals in two World Cup 2022 qualifiers from the South American regionafter netting one of the goals in the 3-0 home win over Paraguay for the Chilean national team. Erick Pulgar set Chile on their way to an important victory with a first half brace before Bereton settled the game with his second half strike.
The victory over Venezuela moved Chile to within three points of Colombia who occupy the fourth and final automatic spot for the World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar.
